There are only a few really high-profile female directors. When Kathryn Bigelow took home the Academy's Best Director award for the film The Hurt Locker, she made a mark in Oscar history for being the first female director to win the award.
In fact, female directors in Hollywood are extremely an under-represented minority, which is why when news broke out that Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director of 50 Shades of Grey, feels like she does not want to make another film again, it is rather disheartening.

Nobody can blame the 47-year old English filmmaker though. Despite 50 Shades of Grey's overwhelming box office success, it has received its fair share of critical beating, but that is not the reason why Sam feels like she wants to quit directing.
The foundation of Sam's feelings is based on her conflicts with the novel's author E.L. James and the fact that she was not tasked to direct the next two sequels. Sam said, "I feel like I never want to make a movie again. Maybe that will possibly change soon."
Sam also expressed her admiration for Dakota Johnson, who plays Anastasia Steele in the movie. Talking to Vogue about the 25-year old's monologue, she revealed that Dakota "blew us out of the water," and continued that the actress really knew how to play someone so vulnerable and fragile. Dakota's performance in 50 Shades of Grey was only one of the few that earned critical praise.
As for Sam's future in filmmaking, what we all can do is just wait and hope that she changes her mind. After all, she was the director of Nowhere Boy, a biopic about John Lennon's childhood, which got nominated for a BAFTA award.
50 Shades of Grey is still showing in theaters nationwide.
