Patrick Dempsey, more popularly known as Dr. McDreamy or Dr. Derek Shepherd in the medical drama, 'Grey's Anatomy' bade his goodbye as one of the original characters of the show, as his character was killed off last Thursday night, People Magazine reports.

The heart shattering episode, "How To Save A Life", titled after the show's soundtrack of the same title, features Dr. Shepherd trying to help a family following a car accident.

As Dr. Shepherd drives away from the scene, his car rams into an oncoming truck. Dempsey's character gives a detailed step on how his life would be saved, noting the mistakes made by his unprepared surgeons.

In the end, Shepherd is declared brain dead and there was no intervention left to save him. His wife, lead character Dr. Meredith Grey, played by actress Ellen Pompeo, withdrew the life support.

Avid fans of the show were in shock and expressed their feelings of devastation. Patrick Dempsey's final episode became the main topic in social media.

One expressed her shock in the show by tweeting when will all the fans start group therapy. Another tweeted that she actually grew attached to the Grey's Anatomy characters and seeing one character killed made her depressed,

A husband also shared in Twitter that his wife was crying non stop in the living room while watching the emotional scene of Meredith Grey pulling the plug.

While some felt sad with the conclusion, some also expressed outrage towards the creator Shonda Rhimes, who faced the same bashing after her other TV show,Scandal, also had a surprise twist last week.

With Dr. Shepherd killed off in the show, there's bound to be more surprises in store as Grey's Anatomy airs its two hour episode, titled "She's Leaving Home" next week.

The season finale is set to air on May 14.
