Pejic, the renowned model who has already been on the covers of "Elle" and French "Vogue," publicly proclaimed that she is now a transgender woman.

The 22-year-old has been able to model for both men's and women's fashion due to her androgynous features. However, in light of her recent announcement, she said that she will only model women's fashion from now on, according to a statement emailed to the Huffington Post.

Pejic also uploaded a selfie on Facebook with a message to her fans, thanking them for their support throughout the years. The model said that she has learned a lot throughout her career and the response to the announcement was an overwhelming reminder of why she needed to come out to the public.

Pejic wrote a missive to transgender youth having difficulties, reminding them to respect themselves and to be proud of who they are.

She said that people, regardless of gender identity or sexuality, are still human beings that deserve equality. To be perceived as what the person is is a basic human right, the transgender model added.

Pejic took the fashion industry by storm in 2011 with her androgynous look, and has participated in both men's and women's fashion shows, according to the International Business Times.

Although she is admired for her courage in coming out, Pejic is not the first to announce that she is a trans woman in the fashion industry.

Isis king made history as the first trans model to compete in the 10th cycle of "America's Next Top Model." Lea T, described as a "Brazilian bombshell" by Out Magazine, was another revolutionary transgender supermodel who rose to prominence in 2010.
