The Beipanjiang Bridge, a 565-meter high bridge in the South Western region of China, which would be the world's largest bridge, is scheduled to be finished later this year.

Based on its vertical measurement, the bridge would beat the Sidu River Bridge in Hubei province to take the title of the world's largest bridge.

The final piece of the bridge, which would connect Yunnan province and Guizhou province, was put in place on Saturday.

According to China Central Television, the bridge is scheduled to be opened by the end of the year and will reduce travel time between Liupanshui in Guizhou province to Xuanwei in the neighboring Yunnan province from five hours to about two hours and thirty minutes.

The deck of the road bridge over a valley in the region is 24 meters higher than the top of the recently renovated One World Trade Centre in New York City.

The whole construction cost of the 1,341-meter long bridge is estimated to be about 1 billion yuan ($150m).

China has paid great attention to its infrastructure amid slow economic growth.

A 4.7 trillion ($46 billion) plan aimed at improving the country's transport infrastructure within a three year span was unveiled in May. It covers 303 projects that include railways and highways.

The mountainous Guizhou province is home to seven of the 10 highest bridges in China, according to Xinhua.

In a related incident, a bridge in Jiangxi province in China that was undergoing renovations collapsed on Sunday morning.
