North Korea conducted its fifth nuclear test last Friday. This test followed its fourth nuclear test conducted in January. Wang told his Russian counterpart that China urges North Korea and related parties to maintain calm and restrain from taking any action that would escalate the situation.

China is also urging North Korea and related parties to adhere to the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and implement them, according to Xinhua.  Wang said that Beijing would like to see the resumption of dialogue and the de-escalation of the post-nuclear-test situation on the peninsula.

Russia's foreign minister reportedly told Wang that Moscow supports China's stance on the recent development in the peninsula, and Russia is also willing to cooperate with China, to maintain peace in the region. China, on the other hand, is willing to develop stronger cooperation with Russia on regional as well international issues.

On the issue of cessation of hostilities in Syria as a result of the new U.S-Russia agreement, Wang told Lavrov that China welcomes the new agreement and hopes that a political solution will be found to the Syrian issue.

The cease-fire in war-torn Syria came into effect at sunset on Monday.  The seven-day truce deal, negotiated by U.S. secretary of state John F. Kerry, and the Russian foreign minister, is backed by Syrian President Bashar Assad's government.
