China Braces for Typhoon Meranti

China is among other countries that have begun taking security measures in preparation for the Typhoon Meranti which is set to make landfall on Thursday.
Typhoon Meranti is a Category 5 hurricane on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale.

According to a statement press release by the National Commission for Disaster Reduction (NDCR) as well as the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guandong, Hainan and Shanghai are likely to be affected by the storm.
Authorities in the regions have started paying giving out information about the incident as it arrives. They have also been requested to prepare aid and relief.
According to a weather forecast, the whole event will begin in South China's Guangdong or Fujian provinces during the day.
"If it lands in eastern Guangdong, it will become the strongest typhoon to churn ashore there in 47 years," said a forecaster with Guangdong provincial meteorological station Zhang Dong.
"It only took nine hours for Meranti to grow into a super typhoon from a typhoon," he added. "Packing winds between 202 to 220 kilometers per hour, it is interacting with another storm, Malakas, 1000 kilometers away and the route could be hard to predict."
Fishermen have been advised to return their boats back to shore and take shelter. Tourist activities around beaches have also been closed in preparation for the typhoon.
