Star Trek Beyond held on atop the Chinese box office for a second straight week, pulling in $23 million in the first full week of this month, according to consulting firm Artisan Gateway.
The old sci-fi series managed to rake in $11.3 million between Friday and Sunday, a steep 66 percent drop from its solid $33.3 million opening week, The Hollywood Reporter noted. The Paramount franchise sequel is pushing its 10-day total to $53.3 million, thanks to its Chinese backers Alibaba Pictures and Huahua Media.

Star Trek Beyond should surpass the performance of Star Trek Into Darkness in China's box office. The 2013 movie grossed $57 million, nearly 12 percent of its global ticket sales at $467 million, the Los Angeles Times noted.
Meanwhile, trailing behind in the second spot is Sony's fantasy-adventure film The Shallows, which talks about a female surfer, played by Blake Lively, being attacked by a great white shark. The shark-attack flick opened Friday in China and earned $8.5 million.
The Shallows edged EuropaCorp's Nine Lives, which secured the third place with $8.3 million. The family comedy that was co-produced by China's Fundamental Films depicts a businessman whose consciousness is trapped inside a cat.
Claiming the fourth place is 20th Century Fox's computer-animated comedy adventure Ice Age: Collision Course earning another $2.5 million in its third week, nudging its 20-day total in China to $63.6 million. Jason Bourne also added $1.1 million, giving the Universal thriller $66.3 million all in all.
Rounding out the top five was Japanese sci-fi thriller Parasyte, grossing $3.1 million. The Toho International release explores the struggle of a boy with alien parasites.
