Archaeologists have discovered a rare Viking fortress in Denmark in the shape of a large ring.
Considered only the fifth of its kind, the fort is believed by archaeologists to have been a place Vikings used for training before launching a massive invasion of England in 1013.

The fortress was found around 30 miles south of Copenhagen, off the island called Zealand near the Danish city of Køge.
This discovery is of great significance since it will certainly help gain new perspective in further understanding the Viking wars and conflicts.
According to Søren Sindbæk, a professor of medieval archaeology from Aarhus University, the discovery of the fortress was unprecedented because it was thought Vikings are pirates and berserkers in nature incapable of building something with a magnitude of a fortress.
Similar to the other four fortresses that were also discovered in Denmark, this one forms a perfect circle. It includes four gateways located in different compass directions, facing outwards.
This new fortress has a diameter of 475 feet and is the third largest of its kind. It also consists of a 35-foot wide circular defensive wall surrounded by a stakewall made of wooden spikes.
Dr. Sindbæk said the site saw a lot of fighting and seems like an active military camp. He made this conclusion based on the evidence of massive charred and burned down gates and oak posts found on the site.
Helen Goodchild, an archaeological geophysicist from the University of York, also measured the magnetism found in the earth to unlock features without damaging the site.
The "ghost image" of the fortress was formed using data collected from carbon dating and revealed it was a Viking masterpiece.
Dr. Sindbæk said this discovery may help further understand the historic events that took place in the fortress. He also awaits the results that could show if the fortress was built under King Harald Bluetooth or before his rule.
