Chen Liting, which may be not familiar to the young generation, is a leading person in the history of Chinese film. He was a film director, drama director, and also a drama theorist. He passed away on 27^th morning in the Shanghai Huadong Hospital. As an ancestor of the film theory and a pioneer of the modern Chinese film and drama, he has contributed lots of important films to us.

Career and the War

He was born in 1910 in Shanghai, and graduated from Shanghai Shada University. He started working on drama after he graduated in 1930. Two years later, he joined the left-wing drama association, acted as the leader of the association. During that time, he was a special writer for the Shanghai Morning Post and he also wrote dramas. Besides, he translated some books describing the film theory from the authors in USSR, such as Vsevolod Poudovkine. Dropping Your Whip was created and directed by him and was performed in the streets during the Sino-Japan war. Large amounts of people were encouraged by the film. Another famous drama was Qu Yuan, which was directed by Chen Liting as well. He played an important role in establishing the drama theory system in China. In the following years, he wrote a book about the film theory, which showed how he viewed the film theory. The drama The Pretty Women was also created at this time.

Film and Drama

Chen Liting's life is full of film and drama. According to his friends, he is experienced. He was always willing to spend more time on the scripts of the play. People sometimes complained he slowed down the work; however no one doubted about his masterpieces. When he was at his senior age, he usually stayed at home, and read the newspaper; he didn't want to miss any news of his country.
