The 26th Tokyo International Film Festival will be held in Roppongi of Tokyo from October 17th to October 25th. Chen Kaige said: "No matter what epoch it is now, the really masterpieces are always in the minority."
Though nowadays the film industry defines the most successful films as the most profitable works, rather than those films that have the capacity to stir the audience's hearts. However, great films can still stand out above the rest, because a sincere movie is always able to touch the hearts of people.
At this year's Tokyo International Film Festival, the Somali pirate hostage drama "Captain Phillips", which was directed by Paul Greengrass, who was the director of 2004's "The Bourne Supremacy" and 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum", will open the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival on October 17th. While a Japanese film "The Kiyosu Conference", which was directed by Koki Mitani and starred by Fumiyo Kohinata, Koji Yakusho and Kyoka Suzuki, will close this year's edition.
Chen Kaige has a deep relationship with Tokyo International Film Festival. In 1993, his film "Farewell My Concubine" was shown in the special screening section at the 6th Tokyo International Film Festival. In 2008, Chen Kaige was awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award along with Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov. The award is given each year to one of the masters of world cinema. Before, Hollywood director Steven Spielberg, Japanese director Yoji Yamada and Kon Ichikawa, and Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien have been awarded the Akira Kurosawa Award.
