This was Li's first visit to the UN headquarters as the prime minister of China. The Chinese Premier announced a humanitarian aid of $100 million to support the UN's efforts to support refugees and deal with the ongoing immigration crisis.
Li also chaired a roundtable meeting on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. According to Xinhua, he announced that China has agreed to give an additional $100 million to the UN development agencies by 2020. In next three years, China's donation to the Global Fund for fighting tuberculosis, malaria, and AIDS is likely to reach $18 million.
Li met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and with the leaders of the United States, New Zealand, Pakistan, and France. He also announced that Beijing plans to set up a clearing bank for the yuan in the United States as well as resume beef imports from the US.
While addressing the Economic Club of New York at a dinner party, Li said that frictions are normal in the ties between China and US. He called on both sides to handle their differences in a proper way.
Li also met French President Francois Hollande. Both leaders discussed Britain's Hinkley Point nuclear power plant project. They also agreed to boost cooperation in third-party markets.
