Uber riders in China have reported seeing their requests picked up by drivers with zombie-like profile pictures to scare them.

Upon seeing zombie-like profile pictures of Uber drivers, the passengers reportedly canceled their rides, and the drivers collected a small cancellation fee, according to The Next Web. Some passengers in Tianjin, Qingdao, Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou have reported similar experiences with Zombie Uber drivers.

Passengers have also complained about how drivers “started” their trips on the app even before they got to the car. In addition, drivers do not pick the calls from the riders.

Uber has acknowledged the issue, and the company is currently gathering evidence and user reports. Uber said it would not tolerate the scamming behavior of the drivers. The ride-hailing service also said it would refund the money to scammed passengers is they report such incidents through the app.

“We have taken immediate actions and banned these reported individual fraud accounts while continuing to investigate and crack down on any fraudulent behavior to protect rider and driver interests,” an Uber spokesperson said in a statement.

In April, Uber rolled out a facial recognition feature in China, which helps in matching drivers’ faces to their profile pictures when they sign up, TechSpot reported. Furthermore, the company periodically checks facial recognition tests to make sure that the person in the driver’s seat is the same one as in the photo associated with that profile.
