Wi-Fi calling for Apple's iPhone 6 is in AT&T's plans for 2015, the telecommunications giant announced Friday. Ralph de la Vega, AT&T president and CEO, made the announcement at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference.
An early Wi-Fi proponent with more access points than most other carriers, AT&T intends to carry Wi-Fi calling in its 3G Voice and voice-over-LTE service plans. De la Vega said the company was focused on employing the service as an additional feature rather than a market selling point. He said this would enable the company to offer a national network of unlimited text and talk capability.

Competitors, notably T-Mobile, have been rolling out Wi-Fi talk this year with massive events and promotional campaigns. It's just business as usual for AT&T, according to de la Vega, who said the other companies have coverage issues, so needed to tout something his company was doing as a matter of business as usual.
AT&T is waiting to next year to go fully operational because the company wants to do the roll-out right, seamlessly and customer-friendly, de la Vega said. Because the market leading company already has so many access points, he said, it could afford to wait a few months to make sure everything goes smoothly.
The new Wi-Fi calling should create three times the speed of previous systems, according to AT&T. It's targeted for use in the new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone Plus. This would catch up with T-Mobile already offering the service on newly introduced iPhones.
