Scientists say eating two or more servings of fish every week can be associated with a lower risk of hearing loss in women.

Women that consume two or more servings of fish every week potentially have a 20 percent lower risk of hearing loss compared to women who rarely eat fish as part of their diet, according to researchers at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

In addition, acquired hearing loss is highly prevalent among women and leads to a more disabling chronic health condition, said Sharon Curhan, who is a co-author of the study.

Curhan said although hearing decline is usually considered an inevitable sign of aging, there are several potentially modifiable risk factors that provided new insights and could help prevent the delay of acquired hearing loss.

Over time, the study examined the benefits and effects of consuming specific types of fish, long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and hearing self-reported by women.

The study's data was gathered from the Nurses' Health Study II that observed 65,215 women from 1991 to 2009. There were 11,606 cases of hearing loss reported in this group.

Compared to women that rarely had fish as part of their regular diet, women who consumed two or more servings of fish per week have a potential 20 percent lower risk of hearing loss.

Curhan also said the fish be tuna, dark fish, light fish or shellfish all tended to be associated with lower risk. These findings suggest diet could play a crucial role in the prevention of acquired hearing loss.

The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
