Breastfeeding can strengthen minds, research show

Breastfeeding

A new study from University of Pittsburg shows that breastfeeding don't just affect children's physical strength but also affects their minds.

To come up with these findings, researchers compared the academic performances of children from different countries to the fatty acids - Omega-3 and Omega 6-- that they received from their mothers through breast feeding.

Researchers showed that Omega-3 Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) found in mother's milk composed of fast that are found in fish, nuts and seeds affects the children's test performance by 20 percent.

Steven Gaulin, one of the reasearchers, said that human intelligence affects a huge part of a person's brain.

Researchers found out that Omega-3 fatty acids like DHA can build extra building materials that can make a person smarter.

However, Omega-6 fats seemed to have a undermining affect to DHA and seems to be bad for the brains.

They found out that there are different kinds of fats that could interfere with the body but the DHA that came from breast feeding shows that brain-essential fats can survive the competition with Omega-6.

Researchers also found out that breastfeeding allow mothers to transfer brain-building fats to their children.

Their findings showed that it is not just proper diet that contributes to a child's health but also economic wellbeing.

Gaulin said that both factors explains the differences of each nation but the fatty acid profile of the average mother's milk in a given country is still the better predictor for the cognitive performance of children.

Researchers said that they are looking at the mother's diet as the key to building brain fat since they need to it acquire Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Gaulin believes that their results can help the agribusiness-based diets of America because they tend to have very low DHA levels.
