Taking over soon after World War II in 1946, Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej left a legacy of being the unifying father figure in the deeply polarised nation and a source of stability in a country hit by periods of political disturbance. Thailand has endured more than 12 coups.
The late King, who started his reign at 18 years old to the country once known as Siam, died on Thursday in Bangkok. An announcement from the Royal Palace said Bhumibol "passed away peacefully" at 3.52pm (8.52am BST) at Siriraj hospital. Details or reason of death was no longer cited, though.
Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-Ocha, clad in a black outfit, appeared on national T.V channels moment after the announcement. In a televised address to the nation, he verified as well that the Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will be the new ruler to succeed to the throne.
He said Thailand will be mourning for a year for losing a great leader. He likewise revealed that all entertainment gatherings must be "toned down" for a month.
Calling the monarch's demise as "the most devastating moment for Thais," the prime minister stated, "He is now in heaven and may be looking over Thai citizens from there."
With his demise, Thailand will now be ruled by an alleged jet-setting playboy, who is said to be far from the image of his father.
