Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio is officially on China's Twitter-like Weibo, creating his account last Saturday (Oct. 8) at 4:01 P.M.
Despite the immense popularity in China, the Hollywood actor announced his presence in a very simple post: "Hello, China! I'm Leonardo."
Like Us on Facebook
Just two days after posting, the message received more than 710,000 likes, 158,000 shares, and 188,000 comments, Shanghaiist reported. And many of these came from DiCaprio's female fans.
"Welcome to Weibo! We are so excited that Chinese fans can take a step closer to you, and know more things about you and your films. Hope we will have a good communication," a top-rated comment with more than 122,000 likes read, as cited by Shanghaiist.
While many had plenty to say, some Weibo users reportedly spammed the actor's post with humorous memes and photos.
It was flooded to that extent that some fans expressed worry that it might scare DiCaprio off, with one fan quoted posting "I'm afraid that his next post will be: Bye China!"
Other fans, on the other hand, enjoyed the welcome memes China sent to the actor, with China Daily citing one Weibo user Liangshuitangsiren saying: "Hahaha, how our Chinese fans welcome him is unique like no other."
The Revenant actor easily gained 1.2 million followers in two days' time, an impressive growth since Stephen Hawking's whopping 1 million followers in just six hours after joining Weibo last April.
But, DiCaprio is really no stranger to China. It can be recalled that during this year's Academy Awards, Chinese fans have clearly been rooting for DiCaprio's long-due Oscars statue. Social networking sites in China were taken by storm soon after they learned about the actor's victory. Many hailed the actor while some sent their congratulations via Weibo.
