Facebook and Alphabet Inc. will team up with a small Chinese company to build a high-speed internet cable between Los Angeles and Hong Kong to be launched in 2018.

The Pacific Light Cable Network will stretch more than 12,800 kilometers and use fiber-optic technology to support the high-capacity 120 terabits per second route, TE Subcom, a U.S. unit of the Swiss tech supplier TE Connectivity Ltd., said, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Funding the first submarine cable from both countries are Hong Kong-based Pacific Light Data Communication and TE Subcom, the USB Port reported. Google and Facebook have also agreed to the deal on Wednesday (Oct. 12) to establish the cable together.

"It is certainly gratifying that global technology companies like Google and Facebook have become co-investors," Wei Junkang, the Chinese company's chairman, said.

The Pacific Light Cable Network will double the speed of the current record, which is held by a cable that Google's system FASTER.

The new submarine cable, which will soon become the highest-capacity route between the United States and Asia, will allow Facebook and Google to provide faster and more reliable service to visitors.

Although specifics of the agreement and financial terms have not been disclosed yet, the companies will likely get shares of the cable's total capacity and lease out the other spaces, the Verge noted.

However, as construction advances, both companies may independently choose network equipment, what they think would be for the best optical technology, the USB Port noted.

The Pacific Light Cable Network will be Google's sixth submarine cable. Facebook, on the other hand, has previously teamed up with Microsoft to build a high capacity cable across the Atlantic.

Pacific Light Data, however, is a newbie in the industry. But earlier this year, it paid $11.3 million to acquire its interest in the project from China Soft Power Technology Holdings Ltd.
