Yoga and meditation can help fight migraine attacks, said a new study published in the journal, Headache,

Researchers from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina discovered people that experience migraines can greatly benefit from an intervention program aptly called "Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)."

This program, developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, uses the effective combination of mindfulness meditation alongside yoga.

For the study, 19 adults with migraines were given the option to attend eight MBSR weekly sessions or standard medical treatment.

During those eight weeks, the yoga-meditation group were expected to religiously follow therapy for 45 minutes, five days a week.

Analyzing the participants after their migraine treatments, researchers found the mindfulness based yoga group had 1.4 less migraine episodes every month compared to the other group that received regular medical treatment.

The MBSR intervention program also lessened migraine episodes by reducing its frequency and shortening the length of the episodes.

The MSBR participants had reasonably lower incidents of migraines that were remarkably less severe and painful, according to Rebecca Erwin Wells, lead author of the study and assistant professor of neurology at the Wake Forest Baptist.

The effects accompanying the headaches were described as shorter episodes also less disabling. In addition, participants acquired mindfulness and a strong belief they can overcome their migraines with self control and discipline.

The authors believe the power of mindfulness yoga helped fight stress, which is the main trigger for migraines.

This research supports other studies that support the benefits of mind and body interventions. Further research and evaluation are still needed to develop a specific standard meditation intervention program to counter migraines.
