China through its Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, aired its views on the ongoing Syrian crisis, particularly on the use of chemical weapons in an attack last week. The country, whose remarkable growth has the whole world touting it as the next Great Power, calls for restraint from all sides of the crisis.

China's call for restraint does not stop on Syrian government and the opposition groups. It extends to the US and its allies, countries that have released statements of their intentions to launch strikes against Syria over the chemical attacks issue. The US and its Western allies have made it clear that they would not hesitate to use military action against Syria if necessary, or if chemical weapons were indeed used against a small province in Damascus. The United Nations is currently investigating the matter.

China however disapproves of this planned military intervention. Military intervention can only aggravate the crisis in the Middle East. There are no excuses for strikes, China proclaimed, if there is no sold legal basis. Launching attacks without clear legal basis would only lead to regional insecurity and violate the fabrics of international relations.

By being convinced already of the Syrian government's hand in the chemical attack even without the final verdict of UN chemical weapons inspectors, the US and its allies are acting like a judge and an executioner in one. Launching military strikes can only make matters worse, not only Syria, but on the whole world.

China claimed that even though the Bashar Al-Assad regime is hard to support, attacking it without knowing fully why the regime would actually use chemical weapons when it already gained the upper hand over opposition can be detrimental. Rather, everyone should just wait a bit more and cool their heels. Military intervention would only be adding fuel to the fire, and worsen the crisis further.

The US should already learn from its past mistakes with Libya and Iraq.
