These sanitary napkins are believed to be on sale across China since 2013.

Nanchang News reported that they were primarily sold in supermarkets under the trademarks of popular Chinese brandsm such as ABC or Whisper.

The package colours of fake products are reportedly slightly darker, thus, consumers have been urged to check the colouring of the package before buying sanitary napkins.

It has not been verified yet though, whether these fake napkins were distributed in international markets.

Meanwhile, the scandal has taken the Chinese social media by storm. Thousands of Chinese netizens posted their comments under the hashtags #Over10MillionFakeSanitaryTowels and #SanitaryNapkins.

"Why would someone want to hurt me at my most vulnerable?" asked a user by the name Sdanler.

Another Weibo user, zhou6665, claimed that one of her acquaintance purchased fake sanitary towels and suffered a urinary tract infection followed by inflammation.

Several users said that Chinese women in rural areas must be more careful, as they can be easily duped due to lack of information and their reliance on buying discounted products.

Some even went to the extent of calling the suspects as "evils" and called for giving them death penalty.
