The world renowned women's doubles tandem, which entered the tournament as the second-top seeded pair, won their first match as tennis partners since splitting in August after suffering from an early round exit at Montreal last July.

"It's great to be back in Singapore," the 29-year-old Indian tennis superstar said in an interview after the match.

"It's also great to be back with Martina, and it's good to get that win," Mirza added.

With the win, the team formerly known as "Santina" will be facing the winner between tournament's top seed pair of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic and the third-seeded duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova, according to the official website of the WTA.

Hingis and Mirza has had a spectacular run from 2015 into the early phase of the current year. The Indo-Swiss duo had a remarkable 41-match winning streak and conquered a number of tournaments before splitting up.

Hingis, who became the youngest Grand slam winner in the 20th century, has claimed five tennis majors singles titles under her name. She had won three at the Australian Open, one at Wimbledon and one at the US Open.

Hingis became the top women's singles tennis player in the world on March 31, 1997.

Mirza, who is the highest-ranked female player ever from India being at No. 27 in year 2007, has established herself as the most successful female Indian tennis player ever and one of the country's high profile and highest paid sports celebrity.

She is the current doubles world No. 1, holding the highest rank for 80 weeks since capturing the feat on April of last year.
