Alan Rickman Returns as Director for 'A Little Chaos'

'Harry Potter' star Alan Rickman returns to the directorial seat through the film 'A Little Chaos,' set in 1682 though he doesn't view the movie as a period piece.

Rickman, who garnered popularity by playing the role of the highly-irritable and suspicious Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series describes his film, "A Little Chaos" as a story about the building of the gardens of Versailles in the 17th century though he prefers that his audience would not take it that way.

Instead, the movie is about the character named Sabina de Barra, a woman who tries to steer a world dominated by men, as she clenches to her own personal losses.

The world premiere of "A Little Chaos" is scheduled as the closing gala of the Torronto International Film Festival, the leading public film festival in the world held every September.

Rickman told a media outlet that the film isn't meant to be a documentary as it isn't based on accurate facts and wasn't meant to be that way.

"It's as much about now as it is about then," says the actor-director.

The 'now' that Rickman speaks of, refers to the character of Sabine who is a landscape architect commissioned to construct one of the fountains at the Versailles palace during that time. The character will be portrayed by 'Titanic' actress Kate Winslet.

He told the press that the character couldn't have possibly existed, emphasizing that the story is about the view of a woman about a certain society.

Rickman, who also plays the role of King Louis XIV in the film, said that the story tackles the issue of the suppression of women's contributions to society. He also expounded on how women are manipulated and pushed to exist as "mere decorative pieces."

He said that the story epitomizes the struggle of a woman with a past, trying to make herself useful in a world controlled by men.

Furthermore, Rickman shared that he hasn't been directing films for 17 years due to the Harry Potter series wherein he played a key role.
