According to Fox News, the identity of the aide responsible for the lax approach has not been revealed. State Department spokesman John Kirby told Fox News that during a May 2010 visit to China, Diplomatic Security agents identified classified documents in one of the staff member's suite. However, Secretary Clinton had already departed by that time. The statement was released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.
The incident was recorded by Diplomatic Security on a Form 117. Diplomatic Security is entrusted with protecting the Secretary of State in the United States and abroad. The incident was also included in a separate formal report by the Marine Security Guard.
House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) has approached the FBI for further information. In his request, Nunes cited a whistleblower claiming that the documents were left by Clinton.
The incident came to light during the FBI's investigation into the possible violation of the US Espionage Act by Clinton and her staff. The investigation seeks to establish whether Clinton or her staff mishandled top secret and classified information.
Hillary Clinton is currently at risk of a probe from FBI as it was revealed that some of her emails were found on a computer shared by her closest aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband, Anthony Weiner.
