The country attained a massive feat by reducing its carbon intensity by 20 percent during its 12th five-year plan. The planning period ran from 2010 to 2015.

A senior environmental officer said China is taking huge strides in making its environment safe and clean.
The country reported about meeting its targets for forest reserve growth four years ahead of the schedule. It was further announced that its forest reserves now span 15.1 billion cubic meters, a expected to be achieved by 2020. However, it met the goal with four years to spare.
China had also set the target of controlling its carbon emissions by 17 percent during its 12th five-year plan period. The country hit 20 percent reduction during the said period. For its non-fossil fuel use plan, China hit 12 percent mark, slightly above its target of 11.4 percent.
Xie Zhenhua, China's special representative for climate change, said that China's seven pilot carbon credit trading markets saw volume of 120 million tons of carbon credits by September. The exchanges carried out $472 million worth of carbon credit trade.
It was noted, though, that China still needs to ramp up its measures for environment protection.
According to a report released by Xinhua, The Ministry of Environmental Protection inspected a number of cities in northern China. It was found that some of the cities were not pulling their weight for enforcing the rules and regulations. It specifically named Qianan in Hebei for its "unreasonable" emission control measures.
