Although the film was not even half close to Captain America: Civil War's $30 million opening or Avengers: Age of Ultron's $33 million, it can be comparable to Ant Man's $11.9 million, Forbes noted. That film debuted with $42.77 million on its opening weekend in October 2015, garnering an overall earning of $105.37 million in the mainland.

Meanwhile, the superhero movie also opened to a magical $87.7 million overseas over the weekend. It was released in its first 33 territories, or 45 percent of the market place, a week before it landed in the United States and China, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Doctor Strange dominated across major markets including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Russia, thanks to the interesting fresh character, the visual effects, and Benedict Cumberbatch's impressive acting skills, the Deadline noted.

In a related news, fans went wild after the Doctor Strange's casts including Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, and director Scott Derrickson promoted the film on Sunday in Shanghai.

Marvel Studios screened a 40-minute footage for Chinese media before the premier red carpet. While China.org.cn reported that the screening featured mind-blowing action scenes, Derrickson was quick to say there is more to expect.

"The whole idea going into Doctor Strange was to make a new kind of movie, not just a new kind of superhero movie. To use big-budget visual effects, to do things we haven't seen before. So the audience can expect to have new experiences that they haven't had before in Doctor Strange."
