How to Defeat Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Winter Blues Beckon As Daylight Hours Foreshorten

(Photo : Christopher Furlong) Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or winter depression, is a mood disorder related to the change in the seasons and the resulting reduction of exposure to daylight.

The season changes, and this change can influence your body's melatonin and serotonin - hormones that play a role in sleep timing and mood. When combined, these factors may lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

SAD, or what has historically been called the "wintertime blues," is considered a subtype of a major depressive disorder that primarily affects people during the fall and winter.

It is experienced by millions across the country with the symptoms of weight gain, increased sleepiness, less interest in favorite activities, and increased craving for carbohydrates.

The good news is that you can defeat the SAD by not waiting for springtime but by classic effective treatments, according to Psychology Today, like light therapy, spending time with family and friends, exercise and diet, psychotherapy, and medication.

Light therapy is the so-called "light boxes." It mimics outdoor light by emitting a broad-spectrum ultraviolet light. The most common prescription is 30 minutes of light box use at the beginning of every morning, with the box 12 to 24 inches away with a recommended intensity of the light typically 10,000 lux.

Spending time with family and friends can offer moral support. Focus yourself to go out and see friends, as laughter is a good medicine. Avoid being isolated.

Exercise and Diet are other great non-medication treatments for depression. As it defeats the feeling of being less motivated and having a weight gain.

Psychotherapy involves speaking with a professional clinician about your symptoms.

Medication like antidepressants can help in the treatment of SAD symptoms for severe cases.

If you feel you are suffering the symptoms of SAD, reach out to a therapist and consult your physician. Defeat this SAD before it defeats you.
