Edison Investment Research analyst Dan Ridsdale believes the anti-immigration stance of US President-elect Donald Trump could be the most contentious issue for tech companies in dealing with the incoming administration.

Shares of the largest tech companies were fluctuating up and down after Trump's win in the US presidential election was announced.

"Trump has offered few detailed positions on technology policy, and there will be inevitably be major differences between what Trump has said he will do and what he does do or what he can do," Ridsdale said.

In an emailed research note, Ridsdale pointed out that nevertheless, Trump's electoral thrust has been rejuvenating the traditional manufacturing sector.

While Trump has stated that he is opposed to the H-1B speciality-occupation non-immigrant visas, he has also voiced support for the immigration of highly skilled individuals.

H-1B specialty-occupation non-immigration visas are a key tool for U.S. tech companies looking overseas to fill key tech positions.

Trade relations with countries such as China, which is a major source of goods manufactured for U.S. tech companies, is another issue that tech companies and Trump will have to iron out.

Ridsdale believes that Trump's rhetoric on the trade relationships with China could affect companies such as Apple.

Trump mentioned Apple specifically during his campaign regarding the production of iPhones overseas.

Apple CEO Tim Cook campaigned for Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton, who also enjoyed the support of a majority of the top tech executives.

However, Ridsdale noted that if Trump implements his proposed reduction in corporate taxes, it could lift the earnings of companies across the board.
