China's military did not give an account of what exactly transpired.  Military sources and eyewitnesses say the plane malfunctioned while trying to escape the pending danger. Capt.Yu Xu's parachute hit the wing of another plane killing her.

According to a report by CNN, her co-pilot ejected and landed safely. The other plane that had hit her parachute also landed safely. The Investigation into what might have triggered the plane to malfunction is still on going.

Born in 1986, Yu was raised in Changzhou city, in the Southwest Sichuan Province of China.

She joined the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force in September 2005. Yu made history after she became the first out of four women to have been cleared to fly a fighter plane in 2009. Later in 2012 she qualified to fly the country's third-generation J-10 jet fighter.

Her last performance was earlier this month where she flew the J-10 fighter with August 1 Aerobatics team at the Airshow China in Zhuhai.

"I think the acrobatics are quite difficult with high requirements and standards made in all aspects. Our condition is quite satisfactory, but we need more training if we can be better," she said during a CCTV interview.

All PLA Air Force members mourned Yu's unfortunate death.
