China has made great achievements in magnetic fields as a group of Chinese researchers from the Chinese Academy of Science created the world's superconductive magnet that can top 10 Tesla, which is about 200,000 times the earth's magnetic field and with an inner space of 92 cm in diameter.

This superconducting magnet sets a technological breakthrough both for China and the rest of the world, as it will promote the construction of advanced medical scanning. Also, this is the world's first large-scale magnet as it requires a high-strength magnetic field and capable of generating a 100,000-gauss magnetic field.

According to High Magnetic Field Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Science, a large-scale superconducting magnet is a complicated system that needs good a helium cryogenic cooling system, high stability power supply system, security system, and central control system. The successful achievement of the superconducting magnet also means a successful inspection of these related systems independently developed by CHMFL.

Benefits of Superconducting Magnets

Superconducting magnets pose a big help in scientific research and engineering problems. It also helps physicists to find the right materials in building quantum computers or high-temperature superconductive materials that allow trains to exceed the speed of sound.

Professor Gao Bingjun, the lead scientist, said that the magnets his team was working on could not be used directly for medical purposes, but the technology would lead to more powerful MRI scanners.

Superconducting magnets improve the capabilities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The stronger the magnetic field is, the better the atoms can line up and the finer the resolution of the MRI image. It is understood that a 10 Tesla MRI scanner could produce an image of an area as small as a tenth of a millimetre across that would be enough for scientists to examine neuron activities or heart disease in unprecedented detail. We can expect the possibilities of seeing exactly what is going on inside the human body with the next generation of MRI.
