Despite public disapproval largely because of the stench and toxic emissions, a Chinese firm has built a new incineration plant that aims to do away with landfills and the burning of waste materials.

China's Everbright International was contracted to build the Wujiang plant. The Deputy Director of the firm, Cai Shuguang, explained that burning waste comes with many advantages.
"Combustion reduces the volume, turns it into a resource and detoxifies it," he said. He added that the plant has the potential of being explored fully within 20 years.
The Wujiang plant is located in a low-key environment, 100kms away in the Western region of Shanghai. The plant can handle 1500 tons of waste daily.
"With the land scarce and consumption surging, China has little choice but to burn as much trash as it can," Cai said.
At least 200 trucks are expected to dump 10 tons of rubbish each in a 26-meter pit at the plant daily. Furnace slugs will be recycled, and toxic emissions captured with the least amount being wasted.
The plant is able of generating heat which is capable of running turbines that deliver 500,00 kilowatt-hours of electricity to the power network at a commendable tariff.
Everbright made its name in the waste industry over a decade ago in Suzhou when the company launched its first-ever energy plant. China has a total of 223 plants, a number it intends to double by 2020.
