Chinese tech company JD.com unveiled a trial run for its drone delivery program in rural China. The company carried out the tests in Jiangsu, Sichuan, and Shaanxi provinces as well as outside of Beijing during the Singles Day event last Friday.
The tests are believed to have been carried out smoothly. Josh Gartner, spokesperson for JD.com, told Fortune, "There have been thousands of trial flights, with a portion of those delivering packages to customers." He added that the deliveries made from four different bases in the country were made unhindered.

JD.com had initially launched its drone delivery service in June. The company is potentially looking to expand its drone delivery routes to 100 by the end of 2017. The drone program will help the company in cutting its transportation costs and offer delivery to far flung areas.
JD.com vice president Xiao Jun had earlier stated that drones may cut the cost of delivering a package to less than 0.5 yuan ($0.08). The company drones have a capacity of transporting packages of up to 33 pounds of weight. These machines can achieve the speed of up to 34 miles per hour for a distance of 12 miles maximum.
Bloomberg reported that JD.com drones are pre-programed to face different situations. Unlike its rival Alibaba, JD.com manages a major chunk of its deliveries on its own.
JD.com is the second biggest online direct retailer in the country. It is believed to have nearly 20 percent share of the market, second only to Alibaba's 47 percent share. The company emphasized that drone project is more about making social impact.
