In a statement acquired by The Detroit News, Mazda North America director of design Julien Montousse said, "The CX-5 is the introduction of the next-generation of Mazda car. And although its design allotment was a daunting task, I think we created even something more special here that will compete with the very best."

The Mazda CX-5 will be released first in Japan in February 2017 before hitting the international market. Experts believe that the car will hit the United States by spring 2017.

The Mazda CX-5 will be available in three engine options; the SkyActiv-G 2-liter and 2.5-lliter gasoline engines, as well as the SkyActive-D 2.2-liter diesel engine. All three variants are four-cylinder engine options.

The CX-5 will be the first of Mazda's new-generation model to feature SkyActiv technology and Kodo design theme. SkyActiv is a term used to describe Mazda's next-generation technologies which aim to provide safety, performance, environmental protection, and driving pleasure.

According to Jalopnik, the official launch color of the 2017 CX-5 is Soul Red Crystal which is a slightly saturated version of Mazda's Soul Red color.

Mazda claims that the CX-5 accounts for about 25 percent of the company's global sales volume. The company added that it was able to ship more than 91,000 units in the United States. It is also the best-selling car in Mazda's current lineup.
