Hours after President-elect Donald Trump ranted on his Twitter about cancelling his Tuesday morning meeting with New York Times due to sudden changes of the newspaper's terms and conditions, Trump met with the newspaper's reporters and editors at the news agency's headquarters in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday lunchtime.

New York Times reporters fed the Twitter with a live update of the on going meeting with Trump.

The meeting began with Trump's declaration of having a tremendous respect for the New York Times and it lasted for 75 minute meeting- parrying, debating and, at times, joking.

Why the meeting cancelled and restored?

Trump tweeted about cancelling his New York Times meeting at 6:31 a.m. local time on his Twitter account, then hours later, Trump followed a tweet about the possibility of setting up a new meeting with the newspaper.

According to Eileen Murphy, the Time's head of communication, they only learned that its meeting with Trump has been cancelled after seeing the president-elect's tweet. And then, after the meeting was restored, Murphy announced that Trump will meet with their publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. off the record and then with reporters and columnists on the record.

Murphy clarifies on her statement on the meeting that "We did not change the ground rules at all and made no attempt to."

Murphy said Trump's team attempted to make the entire meeting off the record on Monday, after the two sides had already agreed to do part of it off the record and part of it on the record, which would make some parts of the discussion public. Murphy said the New York Times "refused to agree" to that proposal and the two sides agreed to go back to the original plan.

In a report in New York Times, three people with knowledge about the issue said that the incoming White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus had tried to scuttle the meeting at newspaper by allegedly telling Trump that The Times was shifting its terms. They also added that Priebus had been among those urging the president-elect to cancel his interview because he could face questions he might not be prepared to answer.

Spokesman for Trump declined to comment on the role of Priebus.

The restored meeting was attended by 23 people from New York Times team and five people from Trump's team, including the president-elect Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, when Trump left the meeting, it can be noted that a crowd assembled inside the New York Times building was making audible boos and cheers.
