Amazon has finally announced its experiment in grocery shopping called "Just Walk Out Technology" that uses deep learning algorithms.

Amazon's highly advanced platform allows shoppers to choose whatever they want in the physical store world called Amazon Go and then come out from the store without a checkout and billing process. Shoppers are required to use their Amazon Go app upon entering the store.

Their virtual shopping cart will add all the products they pick from the shop and tabulate the cost of the grocery item the shopper needs to pay. Moreover, it will subtract the cost of grocery to the shoppers’ Amazon account and send the receipt to their email.

Amazon’s “Just Walk Out Technology” uses some combination of sensors, computer vision, and machine learning, keeping track of what was taken off and returned to the shelves inside a virtual cart. It then syncs the data to a handheld device.

The giant e-commerce company has been working with the technology for four years now. The technology also knows when shoppers exit the store via a “transition area,” sensing that they are leaving. Finally, it adds up the items and charges the shoppers’ Amazon account.

“We asked ourselves: what if we could create a shopping experience with no lines and no checkout? Could we push the boundaries of computer vision and machine learning to create a store where customers could simply take what they want and go?” says Amazon on the official Go site.

Amazon Go has a 1,800 square feet store, and the company is currently testing the concept in Seattle. If the test is successful, the company will consider opening over 2,000 grocery stores in the future. Currently, it is available for Amazon employees only and the public launch will likely be in 2017.
