Selena Gomez has been hailed as the most popular celebrity on Instagram for 2016.

The 24-year old actress/singer has more followers on the social media platform than any other celebrity, she currently has 103 million follows and she also owns eight out of the top 10 most liked photos as well as seven of the top 10 celebrity videos on Instagram.

Fans of the star were happy to hear the news seeing as Selena has had a difficult year, she recently had to cancel the rest of her tour to work on healing her depression caused by her struggle with lupus which she has had since 2014. She was photographed smoking outside the rehab facility, the photographs raised questions about whether or not the singer was really in rehab for depression and not something else.

Last month, she attended the American Music Awards upon receiving the award for 'Favourite female pop/rock singer' she urged her fans to be true to themselves saying, "I don't want to see your bodies on Instagram, I want to see what's inside." She also revealed that she took 3 months off of social media while she was in rehab.

Instagram also revealed that young female celebrities like Gomez and Kylie Jenner are their most successful users.

Gomez's best friend Taylor Swift holds the second place with a total of 94 million followers while Ariana Grande, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian hold 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively.

The most followed man this year was also revealed to be Portugal and Real Madrid football player, Cristiano Ronaldo.
