Badminton's second-top women's singles player Carolina Marin is set to start her campaign in the ongoing 2016 BWF World Superseries Finals in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, by facing the tournament's third-seeded shuttler Sun Yu of China in the group phase of the prestigious season-ending event.

Marin, who is looking to win her first World Superseries Finals title, belongs to Group B, which includes newly crowned Denmark Open champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and the Rio Olympic Games silver medalist and 2016 China Open winner PV Sindhu of India.
The upcoming Group phase round robin match will be the Marin and Sun's fifth official meeting since the year 2012. According to the head-to-head analysis of the two players in the official website of the BWF, the two elite badminton competitors have already faced each other in four occasions, with both players winning two matches apiece.
The 23-year-old Spanish Olympic champion got the better of her Chinese opponent in the years 2016 and 2014, defeating the 22-year-old Sun in two events of the Denmark Open. While, on the other hand, the Chinese badminton ace initially won over Marin on the year 2012 at the SCG Thailand Open and registered her second victory against the Spaniard shuttler on 2014 at the Bitburger Badminton Open.
Marin, who is a two-time World Championships winner, is yet to win her first Superseries title for this season. Aside from bagging the gold medal in the last Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the European Championship is the only other tournament that the 23-year-old native of Huelva has captured so far for this year.
Most recently, Marin was eliminated by Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying, who surpassed her for the no. 1 spot in the latest BWF world ranking result, in the semifinal round of the recently concluded Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open last month.
Marin also failed to reach the championship rounds of the Thaihot China Open and the Yonex Denmark Open this season.
