Li was merciless in avenging her recent defeat to Jelena Jankovic in Rome by crushing the Serbian in 57 minutes without giving her opponent the chance to take a set.
Li said she still can recall the feeling of being beaten by Jankovic in Rome. She said she was playing good during that match but the Serbian still managed to win. But after winning on Sunday, Li said she may have played the best match of her whole life.
Playing Aggressively
The Chinese tennis icon was playing aggressively from the start, getting ahead with a 3-0 score in just seven minutes of the match. She was relentless, converting all seven break-point chances and fired 20 winners while Jankovic only managed to fire seven winners.
In a press conference, Li was asked what she ate before the match that caused her victory. She said her key ingredient was rice.
In the quarterfinals, Li will play against Russia's tennis superstar Ekaterina Makarova. She said she would want to play with the same level of intensity as Sunday's match.
Second Pay-Back Victory For Li
It was the second pay-back victory for Li. Last Friday, she overturned last year's defeat by Britain's Laura Robson to get her to the third round.
Last Sunday's victory against Jankovic gives the 31-year-old Li a ticket into the US Open quarter-finals in Flushing Meadows for the second time following her trip to the last eight in 2009.
Also advancing into the quarterfinals is defending champion Serena Williams who won her much-anticipated US Open showdown with Sloane Stephens.
Williams gets a ticket to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows by beating Stephens 6-4,6-1. She will play No. 18 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Her sister Venus was defeated by China's Zhen Jie in the second round, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6.
