China's capital city Beijing on Monday announced to launch new initiatives to curb vehicle emissions by 25 percent till 2017 to reduce the PM 2.5 density of the air that had risen above the prescribed global standards.
The measures issued by Beijing's municipal government pledges to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles to improve the quality of air which has become a cause of concern for the government.
Beijing's municipal government has announced that it will restrict the number of new cars in the country each year and these restrictions will come into effect from January 2014.
The government will promote small displacement vehicles and new energy to reduce the number of vehicles on roads and impose new norms strictly to further reduce fuel consumption in the city by 5 percent as compared to 2012.
The municipal government is further planning to formulate new rules for passenger car traffic and these rules are likely to include time and zone restrictions for passenger cars in several area of the city that are likely to implemented from January 2014. The rules are further likely to impose restrictions in terms of time and area from next year.
In recent years, Chinese government was facing flak from general public on declining quality of air that is causing various diseases with children growing up with asthma and other respiratory diseases.
Four major cities of China that includes Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xi'an has PM level (particles with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 pm) more than the air quality guidelines, set by the World Health Organization.
