China Box Office

(Photo : Facebook) The successful climb of Matt Damon's 'The Great Wall' on its second week of showing was attributed to the overwhelmingly negative reactions from both audiences and critics for 'See You Tomorrow' and 'Railroad Tigers'.

Having a big name and large numbers of screen,  See You Tomorrow, Railroad Tigers, and The Great Wall topped the Christmas weekend edition of the China box office.

See You Tomorrow  Earnings and Reviews

See You Tomorrow (previously known in English as The Ferryman) debuted in the first place with RMB 278 million ($40 million) earnings in three days and as many as 80,000 screening per day.

It is a romantic comedy produced by Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-Wai and starred Tony Leung, Takeshi Kineshiro, and Angelababy. Moviegoers gave the film a pitiful 4.4/10 rating on Douban and professional critics were not any kinder.

Most of the complaints were centered on See You Tomorrow's hackneyed plot and awkward dialogue. And the negative word of mouth seemed to have affected the film's Sunday box office performance. See You Tomorrow slid down to 30 percent from Saturday.

Railroad Tigers Earnings and Reviews

Jackie Chan's action-comedy Railroad Tigers took the second place with a three-day gross of RMB 215 million ($30.1 million) with 60,000 screenings per day.

The story is about a railroad worker who led a team of freedom fighters to oppose the Japanese in order to get food for the poor.

It dipped 3 percent from Saturday to Sunday despite audience and critical ratings only marginally better than See You Tomorrow's.

The Great Wall Earnings and Reviews

The Zhang Yimou-directed film The Great Wall took the third spot, bagging in $26.1 million on its second weekend with 50,000 screenings per day. This represented a 61 percent drop compared with its opening weekend at $66 million.

According to China Film Insider the overwhelmingly negative reactions from audiences and critics for See You Tomorrow and Railroad Tigers have save some face to the epic monster movie of Zhang Yimou for what could have been a disastrous second weekeed plummet.

The Great Wall now has a total cumulative earning of RMB 833 million ($120 million) and will likely pass RMB 1 billion ($158 million).

Other Contenders

According to Variety, Hacksaw Ridge took the fourth place with a 16-day cumulative earnings of $41.1 million. After a long run of 31 days, Moana took the fifth spot with a cumulative earning of $30.3 million. And trailing behind is The Wasted Times with a 10-day total earnings of $15.2 million.

The record-breaking Japanese animation Your Name earned an additional $980,000 on its fourth weekend, raising its overall total to $80.5 million. Meanwhile, the Pierce Brosnan and Anna Friel-starring crime drama I.T. opened with $550,000 and landed on the ninth spot.
