City '404' is located in China's Gansu Province and is believed to have been named after a company owned by the China National Nuclear Corporation. The ghost town is now becoming a major attraction for urban explorers as it is littered with abandoned buildings, hotels, police stations, and supermarkets.
The city also has a children's playground at its center and a park. City 404 is also home to a rail line, which is used to ferry employees to and from their offices, and a zoo with empty cages. There are also power plant cooling towers and hospitals scattered around the town.
The city was constructed in 1958, and it was an important hub for some of the most important nuclear projects. The town's public square has a statue of Mao Zedong. And right behind the statue, there is a building with the nuclear fission symbol emblazoned on it. The symbol features the initials of the China National Nuclear Corp.
Website Sixth Tone featured several pictures of the town showing the zoo gates and other remains. It is believed that many of the city's former residents have now been relocated to other areas including the Jiayuguan. The city's downfall began as China decided to end its nuclear experiments in 1996.
