The U.S. military has confirmed two American service members were among the seven people killed during a suicide car bomb attack near the U.S. Embassy in Kabul Tuesday morning.

In a separate incident, another American soldier training Afghan National Security Forces personnel was killed in western Afghanistan on Monday, when he was shot by a trainee, in what is referred to as a green-on-blue attack.

Earlier, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), a NATO-led security group in Afghanistan, said three of its military personnel were killed in the blast in Kabul that apparently targeted an international military convoy. ISAF did not release the nationalities of those who were killed.

Polish military officers later announced the other soldier killed was a member of the Polish contingent at ISAF, identified as Sgt. Rafal Celebudzki.

The New York Times reports that the attack took place just in front of a U.S. Special Operations base in Kabul, across the U.S. embassy. Two ISAF vehicles were destroyed in the blast which also damaged 17 civilian vehicles. At least four more military personnel were among the 13 wounded in the attack.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the busy airport road after the bombing, as ambulances rushed to the scene to take the wounded to hospitals around the area.

A Taliban spokesman later claimed on social media that they were responsible. Zabiullah Mujahid said on Twitter that the attack had been carried out by one of its members identified as Bilal, who drove a Toyota Corolla rigged with explosives into the middle of the convoy.

The attack came in the midst of a disputed presidential election and the impending withdrawal of most foreign troops by the end of the year.

In the green-on-blue attack in western Afghanistan, ISAF said "one ISAF member died as a result of an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turning his weapon against ISAF members."

"Currently, Afghan officials and ISAF are reviewing the incident. ISAF continues to train, advise and assist the ANSF, and does not view these incidents as representative of the positive relationship between our forces," said the ISAF statement.

Pentagon sources later confirmed the victim was an American member of ISAF. The U.S. military refused to release identification details until after notification of next of kin.

On Aug. 5, U.S. Army Major-General Harold J. Greene was killed and 16 more military personnel were wounded in a green-and-blue incident at a training center in Kabul.
