South Korea is prioritizing a plan to form a specialist unit that will be tasked to get rid of top officials in the North Korean government in case war erupts between the two countries.
The specialist commando unit will target members of North Korea's regime in a bid to disrupt the command-and-control structure of the North Korean army. It will also be assigned of paralyzing Pyongyang's weapons of mass destruction capabilities.

The special force will also be trained to eliminate North Korean President Kim Jong-un at any of his numerous residences and compounds. North Korea's key military and political henchmen will also be targeted.
The unit will also be responsible for securing sites associated with North Korea's weapons of mass production program. Such sites include the Yongbyon nuclear complex and fixed missile launch sites.
Seoul will also be looking for ways to neutralize North Korea's mobile missile launch units, which are expected to pose a bigger threat. In order to make it easier for its special forces to strike command facilities and leadership targets in North Korea, South Korea has already announced that it will invest heavily in equipment for the unit.
According to Jang Jun Kyu, South Korea's Army chief of staff, the military will be prepared to carry out "independent special operations against the North's provocation."
"The army is seeking to have a special operations unit capable of infiltrating, completing its given mission and coming back in one piece," Jang added.
The army chief of staff added that the country has also embarked on upgrading the capabilities of its current Lockheed C-30 Hercules transporters and other aircrafts. In order to carry out the additional duties, the South Korean military will obtain the most advanced version of the Boeing MH-47 Chinook helicopter as well.
Seoul will also acquire next-generation small arms and the latest compact communications. It also plans to acquire the most modern satellite link equipment.
South Korea decided to hasten the formation of the special unit due to rising tensions in the region, which has been fuelled by North Korea's development of nuclear weapons.
The new unit will be formed before the end of this year.
