China's Railway Police Arrest 6,805 Escapees in Operation

In just a span of two months, Chinese railway police forces have arrested a total of 6,805 persons who have escaped prisons and arrested 4,883 others who committed different crimes.

China's Railway Police Bureau said the railway operation that took place from July 1 to August 31 proved successful because authorities have spotted and arrested 6,805 escaped convicts.

Two-Month Operation

The two-month operation also resulted to the uncovering of 4,883 criminal cases nationwide. The railway crimes include stealing, swindling, and fare dodging at railway stations and on trains.

Over the said period, some 872,000 inflammable or explosive items were seized while two guns, 971 play guns, and 68,000 knives were confiscated, the state-owned Xinhua News reported.

The special railway police units launched the nationwide action against criminal activities during the summer transport period, when China's railways and trains and fully-packed with commuters and, as expected, criminal elements who are preying on the public.

Ticket Scalpers, Fare Dodgers

The operation also included a crackdown against ticket scalpers, the Ministry of Public Security said. During the said period, police have booked at least 150 ticket scalping cases and toppled 11 groups that are involved in the illegal practice of tickets reselling at much higher price.

Ticket scalping is the act of buying all available tickets and then reselling them at higher prices to buyers who have no choice but to pay for the ticket because there are no more tickets available for them.

The police seized nearly 5,700 tickets worth CNY900,000 or $146,946 in different areas around the country.

In Shanghai, at least 100 railway passengers were arrested and fined for fare dodging at the Shanghai Railway Station, the Shanghai Evening Post reported.

The report said some fare dodgers were caught on the act of passing their tickets to another person while others were arrested for sneaking into the departure area through the exit point. There were also those who bought tickets for short trips but stayed on the train for long destinations.
