Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Monday fired back at US intelligence for a report that accused his whistleblower website of being used by the Russian government to distribute hacked information from democratic figures during last year's presidential election.

Speaking during an audio-only question and answer session, Assange said that the source of the information was not a member of any government or state parties. He also insisted that his source did not come from the Russian government.
Assange said that Friday's declassified intelligence report titled "Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections" was inadequate and misleading.
"It was not an intelligence report. It does not have the structure of an intelligence report. It does not have the structure of a Presidential Daily Brief. It was frankly quite embarrassing," Assange said, adding that it was clearly designed for political motives.
When asked if the WikiLeaks website was an intermediary affiliated with the Kremlin, Assange responded that he did not want to "play twenty questions with our sources."
The intelligence report put the blame on Russia for the breach of the Democratic officials' email. It also said that Vladimir Putin ordered an "influence campaign" through cyber espionage.
Wikileaks published emails from top DNC officials before the 2016 Democratic convention and later published thousands of emails from the chairman of the Hillary Clinton campaign, John Podesta.
However, Assange has vehemently denied that Russia was the source of the damaging emails.
When asked if he believed that the intelligence report had been fabricated, Assange said that the report does not rise to the level of fabrications, because it uses speculative terms and admits its own speculation.
Assange later indicated that it does not matter who supplied the information to WikiLeaks.
"Should the American people have been denied the true information?" Assange asked.
Assange has been holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012 to avoid deportation on a rape accusation he denies.
