Brennan castigated Trump for comparing US intelligence practices to Nazi Germany. Trump's controversial comments revealed the mistrust between him and the intelligence community that he is on the verge of assuming control over.

In a media interview on Sunday, Brennan questioned the perception created by the world if Trump broadcasts that he does not have confidence in his own country's intelligence community.

"What I do find outrageous is equating the intelligence community with Nazi Germany. I do take great umbrage at that," Brennan said.

Brenna's comments come in the wake of a week in which Trump and intelligence agency chiefs have pointed fingers at each other over an unsubstantiated report that Russia has compromising information on the President-elect.

The unverified information was summarized in a US intelligence report that was presented to President Barack Obama and Trump. The report concluded that Russia tried to swing the outcome of the Nov. 8 election in Trump's favor, by using hack attacks and other means.

Trump went on the attack using his Twitter account, accusing US intelligence agencies of leaking the compromising information. US intelligence chiefs denied the accusation, saying that it was their responsibility to inform Trump that the allegations were in circulation.

Brennan warned that Trump is yet to fully understand Russia's actions.

"Mr. Trump has to understand that absolving Russia of various actions it has taken in the past number of years is a road that I think he needs to be very, very careful about moving down," Brennan said.

On Friday, Trump suggested that he might abolish the sanctions imposed on Russia by the Obama administration.
