Tennis: China's Duan Yingying Passes Through the Second Round of the Australian Open, to Face Venus Williams Next

China's Duan Yingying continued to extend her impressive campaign at the on 105th edition of the Australian Open at the Melbourne Park after carving another spectacular victory in women's singles draw on Tuesday.

The current 87th-ranked Duan registered her second victory at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year after defeating world No. 88 Varvara Lepchenko of the United States in a thrilling 1-6, 6-3, 8-10. The victory was the 2016 Jiangxi Open winner's best performance in a major tennis tournament so far.

The 27-year-old native of Tianjin entered the second-round match with a fresh opening round triumph over Rebecca Sramkova of the Slovakia where Duan notched her first ever win at the prestigious Melbourne-based tennis event.  According to a published report of The Sports Campus, the Chinese tennis ace scored a splendid 6-3, 6-4 straight-game win against the 20-year-old Slovakian, who currently ranks 120th in the world.

Duan dominated the opening set, but the American tennis ace was able to bounce back and forced a decider after she claimed the next game. The third and final set saw the two players giving out their best as both of them refused to give in until the 34th set in which the Chinese competitor finally prevailed.

According to Xinhua, Duan will be facing the tournament's 13th seeded player Venus Williams of the United States in the third round on Friday. Williams, who is a former world No. 1 and a seven-time Grand Slam champion, defeated the Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele in two sets 6-3, 6-2.

"I've never played Venus before, so I don't think I will have any pressure, I'll just play my game and try my best," Duan told reporters thru a translator in the post-match interview, admitting she has never even seen the American tennis star play before.

The 36-year-old Williams has not dropped a single set in her recent two matches at the tournament. She currently ranks No. 13 in the latest WTA world rankings.
