Yuan Wanhai is not alone in this battle with mental illness because there are a number of Chinese who are suffering from this, too. Some of the patients are really prone to act violently after being discharged from a facility. Since many doesn't have access to the rehabilitation centers, their families are left with no option but to lock them up to avoid hurting other people.
A neighbor of the Yuan family told us that Wanhai used to be a jolly person but became violent after getting sick. He would hurt people and destroy things so his father just decided to lock him up.
Wanhai's father, Yuan Changping, said that his son is suffering from a mental illness since 1993 and his conditioned was once controlled after getting treated in a hospital for a year. Unfortunately, after he was released from the facility, his condition worsened and the doctors looking out on him lost hope.
Yuan Patriarch then decided to lock him up in 1996 after he beat him and his mother with sticks and threatened to burn down their home.
Since he caged Wanhai, Wanhai stopped talking and just slept all day. When Mr. Yuan Changping finally decided to let him out, they discovered that Wanhai was already paralyzed and unable to communicate.
Experts think that the lack of rehabilitation is the key reasons for relapse.
Professor Sun Hua of mental health in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University said that Patients like Wanhai are underprivileged from receiving follow-up treatment after discharge from the hospitals which in result aggravated their condition because they miss the best time for rehabilitation.
Luckily, this should happen no more because last May 1, the China's first Mental Health Law was implemented, which will include mentally incapacitated patients in their National Health Database, thus, boosting public awareness and participations in the care for these poor individuals. This Law is expected to provide treatment to institutionalized patients with mild to severe conditions but not for patients who left the hospital against medical advice.
