Men’s Volleyball World Championship: Brazil Shuts out Russia; Germany Stuns Iran

Defending champions Brazil shut out Russia and Germany stunned Iran at the final six of the FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship in Poland on Wednesday.

After a heart-breaking five-set loss to the host nation, Brazil bounced back and defeated second seeded Russia to take over top spot of Pool H 25-22, 25-20-25-21.

Ricardo Lucarelli Santos led Brazil with 15 points followed closely by Wallace De Souza with 14 points while Nikolay Pavlov top scored for Russia with 12 points.

Brazil has four points in the overall standings of Pool H while Poland has two points. Brazil awaits the result between Poland and Russia to determine whether they will be in first or second place in the standings.

Poland and Russia on the other hand are both on a do-or-die situation. If the host nation wins against Russia, they will be on top while Brazil will be in second.

Russia, however, needs to win at least four sets to advance to the final rounds. A five-set win will not be enough for Russia, as they will only end up with two points while Poland gets three points.

In Pool G, Gyorgy Grozer led Germany with 23 points to bounce back after a dismal performance against France, winning against Iran in straight sets 25-15, 25-21, 25-19.

Iran's star player Amir Ghafour was held to just nine points as Germany produced a total of 12 block points to thwart Iran's momentum.

"Yesterday, all was wrong with our team; today my team showed other face," German coach Vital Henen said. "We played good in block and defense."

Germany is now in second place in the overall standings of Pool G and awaits the matchup between France and Iran.

Iran must shut out France in order to keep their hopes alive in the finals slated to start Saturday.
