A search operation has been launched to locate a missing 15-year-old girl with special needs, who reportedly escaped her school by running out of the back door.
Nashaly Perez, who has been determined to have the emotional capacity of a seven-year-old child, was last spotted on Monday afternoon at P371, Lillian Rashkis High School in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. A report from The Wall Street Journal disclosed that the 15-year-old suffers from bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Hence, she is dependent on her medications to alleviate her mood. She also needs her medicines to control her hallucinations and suicidal thoughts.

Her mother, Sandra Perez-Rodriguez, has been on a state of distress since learning of her daughter's disappearance. On a press conference on Wednesday, Rodriguez disclosed that the school failed to immediately inform her that Nashaly was missing. In fact, it was only when she arrived at 1:00 in the afternoon to pick up her daughter earlier than the usual schedule did she find out about the incident. In addition, the school officials did not call the police, and it was even Nashaly's mother who reported the disappearance.
According to Rodriguez, the aide assigned to be with her daughter at all times was the one who informed her of the incident. "I came and [the para-professional] told me my daughter had left school. I said, 'Why didn't you call me?'" Rodriguez detailed. Upon checking with the principal, she was astounded that nobody had bothered to alert the police of Nashaly's disappearance.
Finally, Rodriguez took it upon herself to alert the authorities. "At 1:19 I called the police," she said. "I'm very worried about her. She needs her medication," she further cried in Spanish.
Joan Antonelli, the principal of the school, claimed that Nashaly left with her boyfriend. However, the boyfriend refuted the claim and informed Rodriguez that they have broken up. Antonelli was reassigned to an administrative position by the Department of Education.
In a statement from William Brewly, the boyfriend of Rodriguez, Nashaly was hospitalized at least four times within the last four years due to her suicidal tendencies.
